In the heart of Harrisonburg, Virginia, a fresh sound is emerging from a group of five talented young musicians who call themselves The Anticline from James Madison University. With their dynamic blend of influences and a shared passion for creating music, this band is quickly making a name for themselves in the local music scene. Each member brings a unique background and story, weaving together a rich tapestry of creativity and ambition. The Anticline comprises Holly, 22, a singer from Williamsburg, VA; Hassan, 22, a drummer from Richmond; Sam, 21, a guitarist also hailing from Richmond; Steven, 21, another guitarist from Richmond; and Grace, 21, a bassist from Maryland. What binds them together is more than just their love for music; it’s a story of friendship, collaboration, and serendipitous connections formed during their college years. Holly’s journey began when she was placed as a roommate with Hassan during their sophomore year. A passionate singer, she was thrilled to discover that Hassan and Sam had been wanting to start a band for years. Hassan and Sam’s friendship dates back to their freshman year when they first became roommates in college, and their shared love for music was the catalyst for their aspirations.

The band’s lineup was solidified when they met Steven, who joined the group during their freshman year. He was immediately drawn to the collaborative spirit among them, and his musical education adds depth to their sound. Rounding out the group is Grace, who was introduced to the boys through a previous band they formed. Despite having played the violin in her youth—a skill she has since set aside—Grace embraced the bass guitar, bringing her own musical background into the mix.

The band was born out of a shared desire to create original music. Hassan and Sam had struggled to find the right collaborators before college, but their transition to university life gave them the push they needed to pursue their dreams. They quickly recognized Holly's vocal talents and the potential of Grace's bass playing, leading to the formation of The Anticline. Their diverse musical backgrounds play a crucial role in shaping their sound. The band members grew up surrounded by music—whether listening to their favorite artists, learning instruments, or watching family members perform. This diverse foundation has cultivated a unique blend of influences, from indie rock to jazz, and even classical music. They find inspiration in a wide array of artists, including Hippo Campus, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, and The Smashing Pumpkins, creating a rich and varied sound. What sets The Anticline apart is their commitment to originality. While they occasionally perform covers—often selecting songs from artists they admire like The Strokes and Big Thief—their focus lies primarily on crafting their own music. This creative approach allows them to explore their individual influences while developing a distinct collective voice. Their practice sessions are filled with energy and camaraderie. They thrive in an environment where they can freely experiment and share ideas, and this dynamic translates into their live performances. The band is known for their ability to connect with their audience, creating a vibrant atmosphere that encourages fans to engage with their music. This energy has made their shows unforgettable, as they seamlessly blend various genres and styles. Despite being together for less than a year, The Anticline has achieved significant milestones that demonstrate their potential. They recently opened for Easy Honey at The Camel in Richmond on October 16th, marking a crucial step in their journey. This performance not only allowed them to showcase their talent to a broader audience but also solidified their reputation as a rising band in the local scene.

Hassan has emerged as a key figure in the band, often referred to as the "king" of the music industry due to his ability to network and secure opportunities. His connections have been instrumental in helping The Anticline navigate the music landscape, allowing them to perform alongside artists they admire.

Balancing school and music can be challenging, but The Anticline has managed to create a healthy equilibrium. They understand the demands of their academic commitments and recognize that not every member will be able to make every practice or gig. However, they approach their music with a sense of joy and fulfillment, viewing rehearsals and performances not as chores but as opportunities to express themselves and grow as artists. This positive mindset fosters an environment where they can thrive creatively. Even after long days of classes, the members look forward to coming together and playing music. They draw energy from one another, translating that excitement into their performances, which resonate deeply with their audience. As they approach graduation, the future of The Anticline is bright. The band is determined to release their original music on streaming platforms, aiming to reach fans and new listeners alike. Their recent involvement in a student film, Eclipse by Sophia Miller, where their song “But, I Like Him” was featured, has opened additional doors for exposure and growth. The members of The Anticline are committed to making music a central part of their lives, regardless of where their paths may lead after graduation. They are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead, whether that involves continuing to play together as a band or pursuing individual projects within the music industry. The Anticline is a testament to the power of friendship, collaboration, and shared passion for music. With their diverse backgrounds, unique sound, and unwavering dedication, they are well on their way to becoming a prominent force in Richmond’s music scene. As they continue to grow and evolve, fans can expect to see more of The Anticline, both on stage and in the studio, creating the kind of music that reflects their journey and resonates with listeners. Keep an eye on this rising band; the best is yet to come.
