Moravian, the up-and-coming indie alt-pop group, has been making waves since the release of their debut single, Cocaine, in June 2023. Comprising of Alex (20), Coby (21), Blake (23), Tomi (23), and Rico (23), the band is making a name for themselves in the alternative music scene with their unique blend of sounds, onstage energy, and a growing fanbase. As they gear up for their upcoming tour "Call It What You Want," an EP release, and more, we sat down with the band to get a glimpse into their journey so far and what fans can expect from them next.

The members of Moravian hail from a variety of places, including Clinton Township and Harrison Township, Michigan. The group’s chemistry has been a key component of their success, but they each bring their own individual personalities and influences to the table. Rico, often dubbed “the silent Beatle,” describes himself as "chiller than an iceberg." This laid-back approach helps keep the band grounded as they navigate the highs and lows of their musical careers. Each member, however, has their own way of approaching their craft. Alex, for example, had a late start in music compared to the others. "I wanted to continue my pursuit of music, and I had just started choir and learning how to sing in the past year," Alex explains. "I’ve been playing brass instruments throughout middle and high school and always loved classical music. Never dreamed of being a rockstar until I started playing in Moravian." For some of the others, music has been a lifelong pursuit. Coby, for instance, has always gravitated toward the experimental and art-pop side of the music world. Tomi and Blake, who are also in their early 20s, share a common interest in alt-rock but are also influenced by a diverse range of genres.

Despite their different musical backgrounds, the group united with a common purpose: to make music that connects with people. They each have their own distinct influence, but their bond as a band is rooted in collaboration and mutual respect. “Our music has become much more confident and sure of itself since we started,” the band shares. "Our vision as a group is really starting to come together." Since the release of their debut single Cocaine in June 2023, Moravian has continued to evolve. Their newest track, Room for Two, dropped in September 2024, and the band feels like it represents a more refined version of who they are musically. "Our music has definitely evolved," Alex says. "The new release is an example of that. We’re much more confident now. We’ve learned how to work together better and how to bring our vision to life." The group’s sound is often described as a fusion of alt-pop, art-rock, and experimental rock, with layers of influences ranging from Steely Dan (Alex’s favorite) to The Strokes (Rico and Tomi's go-to band). This unique blend is what has captured the attention of listeners. "I think Room for Two is a good example of how we’ve grown into our sound," Alex continues. "It’s a more curated expression of where we are right now." When asked about the inspiration behind their songs, Alex reveals, “I get a lot of inspiration from fictional stories and history. I think about the past and how it shapes the present. A lot of the emotional depth in our songs comes from these influences." As for their upcoming EP release, which will coincide with a release party on October 26th, the band hints at a deeper exploration of their collective sound. “Expect a more curated idea of what Moravian is as a group. This EP captures a range of emotions and experiences—like the melancholy of rain, the vastness of the sky, the solitude of the woods, and the energy of the city nightlife. It’s a reflection of who we are now.”

Beyond just making music, Moravian understands the importance of building a community around their band. Their growing fanbase is a testament to their dedication to their craft and their ability to connect with listeners on a personal level. As part of this effort, they’ve cultivated a thriving Discord community, allowing fans to interact with the band and each other. Tomi, a fan of Minecraft, and Alex, who has fought a past addiction to Fortnite, are among the members who enjoy gaming in their downtime. Their engagement with fans goes beyond just music, offering a more personal connection. Alex’s absurd pre-show stretches and impromptu dancing with Coby are just a few ways they interact with their audience. “I like to ask my crowd about their favorite foods and fruits. It’s a fun way to connect and get them in a good mood before the show,” Alex adds. Their relationship with fans is also evident in how they approach the idea of fan tattoos. If a fan were to get a tattoo inspired by the band, Alex would suggest lyrics from Room for Two, which carries an uplifting and forward-thinking message. Like many bands, Moravian has faced moments of doubt and uncertainty. But rather than letting these moments break them, they’ve used them as fuel for growth. “When we first started, there were definitely moments where we weren’t sure if things would take off," Alex admits. "But over time, we realized we just had to keep pushing forward. We’ve gotten stronger with every challenge.”

Their journey thus far has included notable milestones, such as being featured on Moore Media Records’ 20th-anniversary album alongside other amazing artists. "It was an incredible feeling to be featured with bands like Camino Kid, LVRS, and Lie," the band shares. "We’re excited to be part of such a special project, and it gives us motivation to keep going." Their next steps include the "Call It What You Want" tour, which kicks off in 2024. The band expresses excitement about playing in cities like Cincinnati, where Tomi lived for over a year. They’re also eager to perform with some of their musical heroes.

Looking to the future, Moravian has big plans. As they continue to grow their presence in the indie music scene, they hope to collaborate with other artists and producers who share their vision. For now, they’re focused on delivering their best music to fans and ensuring that their live shows are unforgettable.

To their present and future fans, the band has a simple message: "Come out, stick around, and enjoy the ride." Moravian is just getting started, and with their infectious energy, refined sound, and unwavering commitment to their craft, it’s clear that they are a band to watch in the years ahead. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering their music, there’s no doubt that Moravian is going places, and they want you to be a part of it.
